Integration of maths and English in vocational programmes — Shipley College

Summary

This Outstanding Teaching, Learning and Assessment (OTLA) project from 2016 - 2017 focused on learners who were not ready for GCSE maths and English and working towards a stepping-stone qualification. Led by Shipley College with Keighley College and Craven College, the aim was to identify how learner progress was affected by collaboration between vocational, maths and English tutors, enabling the former to work with English and maths practitioners to plan and review their teaching. Outcomes include an improvement in Functional Skills English and maths with better integration by vocational tutors and a rise in student attendance. The resources include the case study, presentation slides offering greater detail about the project, a starter activity for learners along with a lesson viewing frame.
