Becoming trauma informed: Developing education practice in offender learning — Weston College

Summary

Weston College, which is the offender learning provider for the South West region. In 2016/17 it developed this outstanding teaching, learning, and assessment project (OTLA) in 2 of its prisons: HMP Eastwood Park and HMP Channing’s Wood to address the impact of trauma on offenders' learning. They researched trauma-informed practice, held focus discussion groups with teachers to gauge their knowledge of trauma-informed practice, conducted walkthroughs to observe practice, and created bespoke training for practitioners.

Outcomes included increased understanding of trauma and how it impacts learning among teachers, the development of new teaching strategies and teaching and learning materials to support trauma-informed practice. Associated resources are included .
