Meaningful maths and English — Activate Learning

Summary

This 2017/19 Outstanding Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (OTLA 3) project by Activate Learning aimed to use research evidence to improve student success rates in GCSE maths and English resits and address widespread perceptions of a national skills gap. Colleges and employers designed and delivered contextualised learning across a range of vocational areas. As a result, Activate Learning has 5 embedded employer projects fully mapped to English and maths GCSE assessment objectives, and they are teaching more students in a way that makes explicit the connections between maths, English, their vocational courses, and their future employment. Project resources include 'Employer Projects How to Guide’ designed to help other providers implement the same approach.

Note on accessibility: The ETF has edited and reformatted the case study to ensure it is accessible, but unfortunately the 'How to Guide' may not be fully accessible as it is a PDF as supplied to the ETF by Activate Learning.
